Phototropism is the movement of plants towards light. 'Photo' refers to light and 'tropism' refers to movement. Plants and flowers grow when their cells get longer or split into new cells. The cells on the side of the stem away from the light grow much faster than those on the sunlight side. The causes the 'dark' side of the stem to bend. All plants need light to make food.
